What is an isotype?

An isotype is a type of logo that represents a brand graphically, without including any letters or words.  Isotype examples are Apple's apple, Twitter's blue bird, or Volkswagen's image.

The objective of this is to provide an image that allows the brand to be easily identified with a drawing, without the need for words or letters. This must be original: differentiating yourself from the isotype of the competition is key so that the client does not confuse the logos.

Characteristics of the isotype

The main characteristics of an isotype are the following:

  1. It allows to recognize a brand without having to add its name or any letter.
  2. It is a drawing and can have different color combinations or use only one.
  3. It conveys a message related to the brand, generally with its values and principles.
  4. It is  recognizable and easy to remember. The longer the drawing manages to stay in a person's mind, the more efficient it will be.
  5. It allows to reinforce the image of a brand.
