Urban Local Self Government in Madhya Pradesh

  • After the reorganization of Madhya Pradesh, the first Municipality Act 1956 was implemented and municipal corporations were formed.
  • In the year 1957 , the Madhya Pradesh Municipality Act , 1961 was passed on the basis of the report submitted in the year 1958 by the committee constituted by the state government to strengthen the municipal structure . 
  • By the 74th Constitutional Amendment 1992 , constitutional status was given to urban bodies. Madhya Pradesh is the first state to follow this Act.
  • Madhya Pradesh Municipality Act 1994 was passed for the implementation of 74th Constitutional Amendment. Under this act, a three-tier urban body was arranged in Madhya Pradesh.

 

Municipal council

  • Municipal corporations are established in cities with a population of more than one lakh. In which the number of members ranges from 40 to 70 . Apart from this, expert members are nominated by the State Government and the MLAs and MPs of that area are ex-officio members of the Municipal Corporation.
  • The chairman of the municipal corporation, the mayor and the members (councillors) are elected directly by the public and the speaker indirectly by the councillors. The Chief Executive Officer of the Municipal Corporation is the Municipal Commissioner. At present there are 16 municipal corporations in Madhya Pradesh .

Municipality

  • Municipalities are established in areas with a population of more than 50 . Whose membership number is 15 to 40 . Apart from this, expert members nominated by the government and MPs and MLAs of that area are ex-officio members of the municipality.
  • The President and Councilors of the Municipality are directly elected by the public and the Vice-Chairman by the Councillors. The Chief Municipal Officer is the Chief Executive Officer of the Municipality. At present there are 98 municipalities in Madhya Pradesh .

 

City Council

  • In such areas with a population of more than 20 thousand, which are changing from village to city , a city council is formed in them. Its membership ranges from 15 to 40 . And two expert members are nominated by the state government and the legislators of the area concerned are ex-officio members of the city council.
  • Its president and councilors are directly elected by the people while the vice-chairman is elected by the councillors. At present there are 264 Municipal Councils in Madhya Pradesh .
